Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study indicates that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such drugs should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Fast Regain

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the jabs report a sudden return of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.

The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
