A defense minister has stated that the MoD is actively looking into the possible security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from discussing classified matters in all cars.
Safety Advice for MoD Staff
During a recent interview on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that MoD staff have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese cars.
The minister explained that the MoD is “investigating” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, but noted that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is not to plug Ministry of Defence devices into their vehicle, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all automobile, to only have those confidential talks in secure locations. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for everyone concerned about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement follows reports from Scandinavian countries have alerted the United Kingdom to the existence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause chaos to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship was reportedly shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
This broader security environment underscores the importance of strong protocols and caution in every aspects of government activities, including vehicle use to communication practices.
